Iron leaving white crumbs on your clothes? Those annoying little deposits can sometimes be caused by mineral or limescale build-up inside a steam iron, particularly in hard-water areas.

It is one of those small household problems that can turn a straightforward pile of ironing into something much more frustrating.

Why Is My Iron Leaving White Crumbs?

When water is heated repeatedly inside a steam iron, minerals can gradually build up. Eventually, small deposits may be released through the steam holes and end up on your clothes.

If this happens, your iron may simply be telling you that it is time for a descale.

Before doing anything, always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular model. Many modern irons have their own anti-scale or self-cleaning system and should be cleaned in a specific way.

Descaling Your Iron

Follow the manufacturer’s recommended descaling instructions rather than using a homemade descaler unless the manual specifically says it is suitable.

It is also worth checking what type of water your iron manufacturer recommends.

Some irons are designed for ordinary tap water, while others may recommend filtered, demineralised or distilled water in hard-water areas. Do not automatically switch to distilled water unless your iron’s instructions say it is suitable, as recommendations vary between manufacturers.

A quick look at the manual can save you from accidentally damaging the appliance.
