Why It Is Important to Keep Your Iron Clean

Over time, an iron can collect traces of fabric treatments, starch, melted fibres and other residue. These marks may build up gradually, particularly when the iron is used regularly.

A dirty soleplate can:

• Drag across clothing rather than glide smoothly
• Leave marks on pale fabrics
• Transfer residue onto freshly washed clothes
• Block steam holes
• Make ironing take longer than it should

Checking the soleplate occasionally can help you deal with marks before they become more difficult to remove.

Cleaning an Iron Soleplate Safely

The tip shown in our picture suggests using a paste made from baking soda and water on a slightly warm soleplate.

Before doing this, unplug the iron and check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Some irons have coated or non-stick soleplates that could be damaged by abrasive products such as baking soda.

Where the manufacturer confirms that this method is suitable:

1. Allow the unplugged iron to cool until it is only slightly warm.
2. Apply a small amount of baking soda and water paste to a soft cloth.
3. Gently work on the marked areas without pushing the paste into the steam holes.
4. Remove all residue carefully with a clean, damp cloth.
5. Allow the iron to dry completely before plugging it in again.

Never immerse an iron in water or attempt to clean it while it is connected to the electricity supply.
